What to do in the Garden this April

April is an excellent month to be out in the garden. With cooler nights and warm days, the temperature is the perfect mix of heat and cool to bring forth a burst of new blooms and foliage colours to all your Autumn flowering plants.

The Flower Garden:

April is a great time of year to start cleaning up the last of the summer annuals and prepping the ground for autumn and winter varieties.

With the cooling weather, the perfect annuals to be planting are:

  • Alyssum
  • Calendulas
  • Dianthus
  • Delphiniums
  • Forget Me Nots
  • Lobelias
  • Pansies
  • Primulas
  • Snapdragons
  • Stocks
  • Sweet Peas
  • Violas

Your autumn flowering bulbs should be starting to sprout in your garden.

Bulbs are arriving at Capalaba Produce with the new season’s range available. With so many to choose from, you can begin planting for the seasons ahead. Be sure to mix in some bulb feed when planting to offer your bulbs the best chance of establishing healthy roots and growth.

Many winter-flowering shrubs are available to buy and are ready to plant throughout April, it’ll give them time enough to establish before winter sets in. If you are planting trees, be sure to stake them if needed. This will help them to grow up strong and tall and will prevent strong winds from the wild weather ahead from blowing them over.

Check your irrigation to ensure things are still running smoothly. Weed your garden and do a general clean up to prepare for the season ahead. Continue to deadhead roses and any other flowers that need it.

Fertilise any of your flowering shrubs or climbers as they finish flowering and plant up any pots or containers for autumn and winter colouring. Make sure you use a quality potting mix and remember to use a soluble or liquid fertiliser weekly to maximise growth

If you are wanting bare-rooted new season trees and roses, come in today to secure your order. Special varieties often sell fast, so order soon to ensure you don’t miss out.

Lawn Maintenance:

Now that the summer heat has passed it is the perfect time to resurrect your lawn by fertilizing, or by sowing a new lawn. Sowing seeds into any gaps you may have, as well as a general blanket cover, will give your lawn an even growth, allowing for a lush new carpet of greenery to take its place.
