Here at Capalaba Produce we believe there’s nothing better than consuming the fruits of your labour from the garden.

The lettuce just has an extra crunch, the tomatoes taste extra sweet, and home-grown citrus has an extra zest. You can’t just beat eating what you grow. With Autumn in full swing there is never a better time to get started in the garden. So, join the team at Capalaba Produce today as we explore the best fruits and veggies to plant in the garden this Autumn.

Citrus

Citrus trees such as lemons, limes, oranges, and mandarins are a staple of home-grown fruits. They thrive in the warm, subtropical climate of Brisbane provide delicious fruits for years to come. When planting citrus, it’s important to choose a spot in the yard with well-draining soil and full sun.

Tomatoes

In Brisbane you can almost grow tomatoes all year round. Like citrus, when you plant your tomatoes be sure they go into a well-draining soil with full sun. To give them an extra boost we recommend adding in some compost or manure to help your tomato plants get established. Before long you’ll be enjoying your very own tomatoes from your garden.

Strawberries

Growing strawberries is a delicious and rewarding experience. With Brisbane’s warm and sunny climate, it’s so easy to grow delicious strawberries at home. Be sure when planting, to choose a full sun, well-draining spot to ensure the best growth.

Leafy Greens

Vegetables like lettuce, spinach, and kale are perfect to plant now the intensity of summer has passed us. These leafy veggies are not only delicious but are packed with nutrients and are easy to grow. When planting, simply plant them in rows or clusters with enough space airflow and to avoid overcrowding. Leafy greens, love water so be sure to water them regularly, especially during dryer periods.

Potato

Who doesn’t love a good potato? Whether mashed, roasted, or in the form a chip, a good potato is hard to pass up. Potatoes are relatively easy to grow. Making sure you choose a certified seed potato is important to ensure no diseases from the seed potato will affect the harvest. Peas & Beans

Peans and beans are a great addition to any garden here in Brisbane throughout autumn as they thrive in the cooler weather. This includes varieties such as snow peas, snap peas, and bush beats. They are relatively easy to grow and produce a bountiful harvest. Simply plant the seeds in a row leaving space between each plant for growth. If you’re planting climbing varieties, be sure to provide support for them to grow such a trellis or a stake.
