Spring with Your Pets

Spring is known as the season of new life and this is true for not only the garden, but also our pets.

As the days get longer and the temperature rises, you may notice some changes in your pet’s energy levels, their behaviour and their needs. So, join the team at Capalaba Produce as we share our tips to keep your pets healthy & happy throughout Spring.

Energy

With the warmer weather and longer days, your pets will most likely have more energy. Dogs may be excited for longer walks, extended play times, and more adventures. Cats may spend more time basking in the sun and exploring. This is the season for longer walks, for more trips to the park and to introduce new games and toys. Stimulating their body and their mind will help to burn that extra energy, all while having fun.

Shedding

With the arrival of Spring your pet may begin shedding their winter coat. You’ll probably notice more loose fur around the house which means regular grooming is required. Regular brushing will reduce shedding, prevent matting and will help keep their coat nice and healthy. A bonus of grooming is that it’s a great bonding time for you and your pet. This grooming time is the perfect opportunity to keep an eye out for any dry skin, rashes, or signs of parasites that become more active in the warmer weather.

Allergies

Like us humans, your pets can suffer from allergies throughout the Spring. Pollen from flowers and trees can cause sneezing, itchy skin, watery eyes, or even breathing issues in your pets. Common signs of allergies in your pets can include scratching, licking paws, red skin, watery eyes and sneezing.

If you think your pet is suffering from allergies we recommend talking to your local vet. Something as simple as wiping their paws after a walk or keeping the windows closed during high pollen days can make a world of difference.

Food and Water

With your pets burning more energy, they may need a bit more food to help sustain a healthy weight. While they may be more active, it is still important to watch their weight and make sure you’re not giving them a bit too much food. As always, we recommend your pet always has access to fresh clean water. With the warmer weather they’ll be drinking more so remember to check the water bowl more often.

In the Yard

Just like your pets, you’re most likely to be spending more time in the yard during these warmer months. If you’re working in your garden, it’s always a good reminder to check whether the new plants you’re adding or the fertlisers you’re using in the garden are pet friendly.

Your pets aren’t the only animals that become more active in the warmer months. It’s a good idea to keep an eye out for snakes, koalas and other animals during any outdoor adventures.

Parasites

The warmer weather can cause an explosion in the activity of parasites like fleas, ticks, and mozzies. We believe that prevention is the best course of action here. Giving your pet a preventive treatment such as NexGard Spectra or Simpacrica Trio is the best way to make sure your pet doesn’t fall victim to these nasty little critters.

Spring is a beautiful time of year for you and for your pets as well. By following our tips, you can make sure your furry friends stay happy and healthy throughout these warmer months. So now is time to grab the leash, grab the ball, and head down to the park and enjoy the sunshine!
